The relativity of the beauty of art
When we look at a drawing, painting, sculpture, or any other type form of visual expression we each see it in our own unique way. We interpret the lines, colors, or forms in a way that no one else does, we see the vision of the artist in a way that cannot be described. What is beauty in art? Beauty in art is what we determine, what we find attractive based upon our own experiences, emotions, and personality. We may find that a classical portrait is beautiful, or it may be that an abstract form inspires us. Why is it relative? It's relative because each of us is an individual and experiences life in our own way. While one person may look at an abstract painting and see nothing, another person may see an image that inspires peace and tranquility. Understanding that not all of us have the same perspective is the key to enjoying art. If you allow your own perceptions to guide you and don't allow the opinions of others to influence you, then you can truly enjoy and experience the wonder that art has to offer.
Art has existed since the dawn of mankind when scribbles on cave walls told the stories of our distant ancestors. It evolved over time and most recently the abstract forms of art have become more popular. Modern art has changed a great deal from those simple drawings on cave walls. Often it may take a great deal of time for a person to determine the intent of a modern artist who works in abstract shapes and colors. Complicating matters further is that determining the message of the artist is often difficult and is interpreted in different ways depending upon the viewer. This new and unique approach to art makes it more difficult to determine what is considered to be a masterpiece, and what is a failure. What is beauty in art? This is a question that is now more difficult to answer due to the complexities of modern, abstract art. Although abstract art is often more difficult to understand, it offers it's own unique advantages. By taking in a piece and absorbing the emotions that an artist put into it, a person can enjoy it in their own way.
As art has evolved, and will continue to evolve we must each make our own decisions on how we feel about it. We must look at something objectively to find if it moves us, if it speaks to us. We must not allow the opinions of others to influence our own thoughts and feelings, only in this way can we truly appreciate art. Why is it relative? It is because it must be. In order for art to be successful it has to appeal to large numbers of people, but do so in different ways to each of them. If everyone were to look at a painting and see it in the same way then the joy and wonder would be lost. Appreciating and understanding art involves taking a look within ourselves and finding out not only if we like a piece of art, but also why we like it.
