Diverse subjects of modern art
The Fine Arts have evolved through the years and have developed into the multiple forms that we now know of it today. In the past, art was limited to mediums such as sculpture, painting and literature. As of now, we have added photography, collage, calligraphy, dance, music, theatre, architecture, film, conceptual art and printmaking. However, these art forms can be categorized into two - namely the visual arts and the performing arts. Because of the multiple art forms, the subjects that they use today in expressing their creativity can be just as diverse. So to narrow it down, our focus would be on the subjects of art today for the visual arts.
As mentioned earlier, there are now quite afew mediums of the visual arts. The most popular under this category are probably that of photography and film because of its wider reach and audience. Subjects of Art today in photography and film are probably the most controversial as well. Since photography and film have become accessible to most people, the subjects that are used can cause quite a stir in society.
Although in the past, subjects for paintings such as nudes, were readily accepted as a work of art. But with that of film and photography, nudity can still raise quite a few eyebrows in the process. Nudity as a subject can still be a bit of a taboo. Experts such as film critics can view nudity as an art differently. If one can see the essence of how the nude subject is portrayed as art, another critic could easily dismiss it as pornographic material that should not be considered as an acceptable work of art.
Although there are still quite a few subjects of art today than can be safer for the visual arts to use. These are the traditional landscapes, local views, animals, seascapes and abstracts to name a few. These subjects are not as controversial as nudity and are generally embraced by both conservative and liberated art enthusiasts. Some artists have even modernized their subjects and made it more exciting by branching out the usual subjects of art and making it more stimulating and adventurous. Examples of these are wildlife pictures or film documentaries that capture wild animals in their natural habitats. Another subject that is commonly utilized by artists, specially photographers and film makers, are natural disasters such as avalanches, storms, tsunamis, or hurricanes to name a few.
The subjects of art today, especially in the visual arts, can generally be anything that the artist's imagination and creativity can fathom. A great example from the past are the works of Pablo Picasso. Audiences today, have become more sophisticated and understandably, more difficult to please and surprise. So, artists are more prone to explore other uncharted areas when it comes to coming up with their subjects that would make it stand out from the rest that have been done before. As long as the artist is able to express his theme in a refreshing and unusual way, his art subject could be anything he wants it to be.
